Timeline

12th Century AD - The game probably descended from the game of "Royal Tennis," which was played in medieval times.

1880s - Became fashionable among the upper class in England.

1887 - The first use of the name "Table Tennis" was used by J.H. Singer in a board and dice game.

1890s - Parker Brothers began making an indoor tennis kit that included a portable net, a small ball covered in netting, and paddles.

1901 - Englishman James Gibb brought hollow, celluloid balls to the game and also invented the game of "Ping Pong." Previously, the balls were made of rubber or cork.

1901 - "The Table Tennis Association" and "The Ping Pong Association" were formed in England.

1926 - "International Table Tennis Federation" is formed.

1927 -The ITTF organizes the first Tennis World Championships in London.

1952 - The wooden bat covered in foam sponge rubber becomes more widely used as opposed to the traditional drum battledores.

1970s - Table tennis players discover that using bicycle tire repair glue to put rubber on a blade dramatically increases the speed and spin that can be put on the ball. This is called "speed glue."

1988 - Table tennis becomes an Olympic event in Seoul, South Korea.2001 - The ITTF changes the scoring system, moving to 11 point games, and using a best of 5 games or best of 7 games match.
